It involves the network of nerve fibers in the tissues, muscles, and blood vessels located in the head and at the base of the skull. Some headaches can be chronic, recurrent and occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea. The pain can be mild or severe enough to disrupt daily activities.

Causes of Headache

Headache is a primary concern for all and is caused by a disturbance of the pain-sensitive structures in the head. The reasons of triggering a headache can be manifolds which may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.

Headaches can be categorized into Cervicogenic Headaches, Tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines. Ninety-five percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches.

Cervicogenic Headaches: It is a syndrome characterized by chronic hemicranial pain and originates in the cervical spine, neck and upper shoulders. Many a times, these headaches can be a byproduct of whiplash, neck injury or muscle trauma due to bad or prolonged posture or severe stress.

Tension headaches: They are the most common type of headaches among adults caused by stress, muscular tension, vascular dilation, postural changes, protracted coughing or sneezing, and fever. It may appear periodically (“episodic,” less than 15 days per month) or daily (“chronic,” more than 15 days per month) and may be described as a mild to moderate constant band-like pain, tightness, or pressure around the forehead or back of the head and neck.

Cluster Headaches: As the name suggests, the cluster headache exhibits a clustering of painful attacks over a period of many weeks, sometimes months. The main causes of cluster headaches include drugs that dilate or constrict blood vessels and alcohol. They may disappear and then recur during the same season in the following year.

Migraine: Frequently accompanied by sensory cautionary signals such as blind spots, flashes of light, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound, migraine is a severe and dreadful headache that brings with itself excruciating pain which can last for hours. The common triggers of migraine include hormonal change, consumption of chocolate, alcohol, cheese, caffeine-rich drinks, sun glare, and unusual smells and odors, stress, changes in the sleep pattern or the environment, fasting, physical exertion and so on.
